Facts
In the 20th Century, flu pandemics occurred in 1918,
1957, and 1968. The 1918 pandemic led to high levels of
illness, social disruption, and economic loss.
The seasonal flu is the most common type of flu. Flu season begins every fall and ends every spring.
When a new type of flu virus emerges, people have little or no immunity to it. It can spread more easily from person to person around the world in a very short time. The Pandemic Flu is this type of virus.
Unlike the seasonal flu, which most people recover within a week or two,
most people who get the Pandemic Flu might not recover, even with medical treatment.
Also, people of every age may be at risk of serious illness or death.
There is not a vaccine for this disease and even if one was developed, it would be a challenge to make enough for everyone and distribute it to all the people that need it, in a timely manner.
